Chastity Belt - Time To Go Home (video)

Here's a sleepy rocknroll jam from sum rocknroll chix. Whether scopin soccer dudes, dancin in the club, drinkin beer, or dancin in the club (w/ Macklemore) Chastity Belt keep it real. There's an obvious reference to other grungy, fuzz pop girl groups here, (IE Vivian Girls, Speedy Ortiz) but Chastity still spit their own sorta blend of high-till-we-die guitar music. If it really is time to go home, these ladies ain't goin nowhere.

Sonny & The Sunsets - Cheap Extensions (video)

Soapsud Psychedelic alien, Sonny Smith, brings his gang (The Sunsets) to an Ashram, to get sorta high and tell stories. Lost in the hazy pinwheel of 60s Folk/Rock n' Roll, Smith has long been one to unwind totally weird tales about space, babes, bad vibes, and old flames. For his latest LP, Talent Night at the Ashram, Smith keeps it real once again. A whole new batch of jangling, LeaveItToBeaver On Acid, sorta jams are slipped through the mail slot of life and spread about the Internet. Cheap Extensions is a blissful, Beach Boys-bside-ish ode to some bird with a totally-out-of-this-world Do. Also there's a fantastic animated video featuring Sonny, the dame in question, and a whole litany of monsters, bosses, bears, and far-out creatures. have a looksie:

The Standells - Dirty Water

Look Back In Anger: Cali based Rock-n-Rollers, The Standells, were early pioneers of transitioning modern Pop from the Doo Wop sound to a more Beatles/Stones-esque guitar based tone. Dirty Water was a major hit that encapsulates The Standells defining, laid back, form of Garage Rock. Sounding a bit like a love-in between Brian Jones and The Black Lips, this song really kicks!

Spoon - Do You

Spoon return with a excessively catchy, strum-heavy new single. Sounding like the beginning half of Smashing Pumpkins 1979 hook, with a familiar, masterfully sharpened Spoonish melody. I feel like Spoon are sometimes overlooked simply because their name is so unassuming. Yet, they're one of the most consistently well produced, thoughtful rock-n-roll song writers in the game, today. The Clientele - An Hour Before The Light

Look Back In Anger: The Clientele are true connoisseurs of nostalgia, crafting masterful sound-pictures that seem to completely encapsulate the feeling of by-gone eras that no one has ever actually lived through. Not unlike a piece by Angelo Badalimenti, or Belle & Sebastion, or Brian Jonestown Massacre, The Clientele traverse the well-trodden path that lies between 90s Dream Pop and moody, 60s Rock-n-roll. It's a sort of sound that is almost unplaceable, like a forgotten Zombies record recently unearthed in someone's attic, or a more modern group, signed to Mexican Summer, with roots in Shoegaze. Soon The Clientele's first record Suburban Light will be reissued and and we can all travel back, once again, to 2000, or perhaps even further.... Whichever it is, this one of my favorite tracks of their's off that record. Have a lis:

The Jesus & Mary Chain - April Skies (video)

Look Back In Anger: We're almost done with these April Skies, so why not revel in their grandeur just a little bit longer. I've been spinning a lot of 21 singles recently, but if you want to get a little more in-depth with this section of Chain history, I'd love to point you towards Darklands. This is one of, if not the best records of JAMC. April Skies is the perfect combo of familiar Mary Chain fuzzpop, with nods to traditional Rock-N-Roll, and Rockabilly. Hardbody, Guitarville, UK. Phoenix - SOS In Bel Air (Ariel Pink Krystal Bamboo Remix)

Its a brand new Phoenix remix, courtesy Monsieur Pink! Ariel transfigures SOS from a bubbly snyth donut into a dreamefied Rock-n-Roll tune. This jam sort of reminds me of an Atlas Sound beat, or like a 60s Beach Boys-esque b-side. (This whole time I thought he had been sayin, "Crystal up in the RoooooOOooOom!") Have a lis:

Cliff Richard and The Shadows - The Young Ones

Look Back In Anger: Early Rock N' Roll British superstar, Cliff Richard was one of the guys who started it all. Adopting the American sound of the 50s and 60s, Richard and The Shadows were one of the first British artists to dominate the UK charts with a Rockabilly sound. Richard pre-dates the Beatles and Stones and was heralded as the British response to Elvis. He seems to barely hold a candle to Presley, though Richard had a far lengthier career than the King, transforming his sound through the 70s and 80s and becoming the 3rd largest selling artist in The Albion. Check this wonderful clip of Cliff in technicolor, from his early picture The Young Ones. You can also catch him this summer, opening for Morrissey at The Barclay's Center

Primal Scream - Goodbye Johnny

The latest clip for Bobby Gillespie's Primal Scream is a real dreamy drag. Shot in an infamous S&M club, Goodbye Johnny is really a bunch of hip homos, dressing up (and down) like Gillespie and doin their thing for the camera. The glittering sleaze of visiting a nightclub during the day gives this video a terrific psyched-out Rock N Roll vibe that is really the full encapsulation of what PS is all about. Dig it:

David Lynch & Lykke Li - I'm Waiting Here

A chilling, midnight-in-the-desert melody, unwinds here, through the disquieting audio filter of David Lynch. Unlike most of the hazified, roots of Rock N' Roll songs, found on Lynch's latest LP, The Big Dream, this one off single with Lykke Li has an ambient yet, haunting refrain that raises it above the rest. Lynch has an ear for tunefulness and his love of Blues and early Doo-Wop has been a feature of nearly each of his film and television projects. Unfortunately, despite all the distortion, dissonance and pitch correction applied to Lynch's voice, his whiny Missoula drawl still dominates most of his songs, to an off-putting level. Lykke Li's voice on the other hand, has a much more dexterous and palatable tone, and so it works almost perfectly with the rest of the creeping instrumentation here. There is an almost transparent connection between this song and something like The World Spins, or even In Dreams, yet Lynch has not lost himself in the soup of the past, but rather reanimated some of its best qualities. Please, step into the passenger seat for this one, and enjoy.. the Full blossom of the evening...
